Population Pyramid Builder

Planning data tool

Builds a population pyramid from manually entered age-group counts and generates a plain-language planning analysis.

How it works

Enter age-group counts for Men+ and Women+, along with the community name and Census year or reference date. The tool draws a population pyramid, calculates key demographic indicators, and produces a planning summary that can be copied into notes, reports, or presentations.

The default layout follows the standard population pyramid format, with Men+ on one side and Women+ on the other. The sides can be flipped if needed. Default labels and colours are provided for consistency, but they can be changed to suit different datasets or presentation needs.

Click “Load Nanaimo 2021 sample” to load age data based on the City of Nanaimo’s 2021 Census Profile and see how the tool works.

The tool calculates total population, children aged 0–14, working-age residents aged 15–64, seniors aged 65 and over, residents aged 85 and over, dependency ratio, and senior gender composition. It also provides basic planning commentary on age structure, families, working-age population, seniors, accessibility, housing, transportation, parks, and community services.

The population pyramid can be downloaded as an SVG file. The planning analysis can also be copied as text for quick use.

When to use it

  • Best used for quick demographic checks, local area profiles, staff report background, presentations, classroom examples, and early planning analysis.
  • Not used for detailed demographic forecasting, population projections, service modelling, capital planning, or official statistical reporting.
  • Audience: planners, students, consultants, elected officials, community groups, and anyone who needs a simple visual and plain-language summary of age structure.

Notes and limits

  • Assumption: The entered age-group counts are accurate and use consistent categories.
  • Known constraint: The tool depends on manual entry and does not validate counts against official Census sources.
  • Edge case: Very small or inconsistent age cohorts may trigger warnings, especially where one age band drops sharply from the previous band. These warnings help flag possible entry errors but do not confirm whether the data is wrong.
